Welcome to Traditional Music of the Dominican Republic. This website was created as part of my final project for musical class. While this page is not comprehensive, it is meant to provide a snapshot of the music, culture and history of the Dominican Republic.
Beaches
The Dominican Republic has some of the best beaches in the world. Known for the white sand and clear blue water it is easy to see why the island has become a travel destination for travelers the world over.
Places of Interest
From the capitol city of Santo Domingo in the south to the laid back and bucolic atmosphere of Santiago de los Caballeros in the Ciabo, northern region of the island, you will find a vibrant and tropical experience awaiting you once you arrive in the Dominican Republic.
Santo Domingo, La Capitol
Santo Domingo is the capitol of the Dominican Republic. It is one of the oldest colonial cities in the Caribbean and the Americas. There are many cultural actives to see here. The city has maintained its connection to the past as many of the historical colonial buildings are still intact. Like many other capitol's throughout the world, Santo Domingo is the economic and commercial engine of this island nation. Every year millions of tourists from around the world come and enjoy the beauty and learn about the history of this beautiful city.
Santiago de los Caballeros
Located in the heart of the Cibao Valley, Santiago de los Caballeros is the second largest city in the Dominican Republic. Colloquially known as the second capitol, Santiago has a rich history that goes back hundreds of years. It is famous for the Monumento de Heroes pictured here, which was dedicated to the brave men who helped fight for Dominican Independence. Santiago is also known for its popular baseball team called the Las Aguilar Cibaenas.
One of the oldest churches in the Caribbean and in the Dominican Republic located in old Santo Domingo."The oldest church in the “New World," Catedral Primada de America, can be found in the heart of the oldest European city in the Americas: La Zona Colonial, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Its foundation stone was laid by Diego Columbus (Christopher's firstborn son) in 1510. It was completed in 1540."
