A Brief History of the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean on the island called Hispaniola. It shares the island to the West with the nation of Haiti. The Dominican Republic has a long, rich and complex history that started during Spanish colonialism, transitioned during its war against Haiti and culminated when they won their independence in 1844.
